Can a cleaner earn a decent living without the customer paying much more?
Yes — but only if you change how the work is done. That answer took twenty years in Finland, and it is why Aurora exists.
- Cleaning at Nordic standards since
- 2005
- Spent refining one method
- 20 yrs
- Paid training before the first job
- 2–4 wks
- Top of the cleaner pay scale, plus benefits
- ฿25,000
The people are not the problem. The industry is.
Thai cleaners work harder than almost anyone we have employed anywhere. What they are rarely given is training — and almost never the right equipment. A cotton mop, a bucket of grey water and no method sets the job up to fail.
Then the result gets blamed on the cleaner, the price gets pushed down, and the wage follows it down. Most cleaning here lives somewhere on this loop.
Twenty years in Finland built the method
Finnish wages are high and cleaning margins are thin, so for twenty years there was exactly one place to find an advantage: the work itself. The order of tasks, the chemicals, the machines, how much time a surface genuinely needs — taken apart and rebuilt, year after year.
High wages did not make us inefficient. They are the reason we became efficient.
Where labour is cheap, nobody is forced to solve that problem, so the method never gets developed. Anyone can buy the machines and the chemicals. The method took twenty years.
Higher wages without higher prices
A trained cleaner with a combination machine and the correct chemicals achieves in one visit what improvised methods cannot achieve at all. Fewer wasted hours, less rework, fewer complaints — that gap is real, and it is what pays the wage.
What our cleaners get
- Paid training first. Two weeks to a month of structured training to Finnish standards — salaried from the first day of training, not the first day of work.
- Real contracts. A written contract, social security registration, and a monthly salary into a bank account. Not cash at the end of the day.
- A route upwards. Measurable targets for quality, punctuality and feedback — pay rises on a set scale, up to ฿25,000 a month plus benefits.
- Full-time from day one. Our first team was employed full-time before we had a full schedule to give them. Deliberately.
- Professional tools. Professional machines and chemicals. Nobody is asked to deliver a premium result with amateur equipment.
Why this matters in your home
Inconsistent cleaning is a turnover problem. When a job pays badly and offers nothing, people leave — and every new visit brings a new, untrained face. We built the opposite: a team paid and trained well enough to stay, so the person who cleans your home in a year is the same person who knows it now.
Well-paid, well-trained, well-equipped people simply do better work. Everything we charge is built on that one bet.
Aurora in Thailand is an experiment I am funding deliberately: can a cleaning company give its people a genuinely better standard of living through efficiency, technology and training — instead of by charging the customer more? I would rather spend the money finding out than run another company the ordinary way.
Many of the people who apply to us are having a difficult time. I wanted to build a place where cleaning is a profession with a route through it, where the work is respected, and where being good at it pays.
Community Day
One full day of professional deep cleaning, given free to a school, temple or shelter in Pattaya — from our first year, not once we can comfortably afford it. A company's habits are set early. These are ours.
